The New Zealand government has decided to back a bill that will increase maximum sentences for animal cruelty offences from three to five years. Agriculture Minister David Carter issued a statement that he would introduce the Animal Welfare Amendment Bill 2010 into Parliament for referral to select committee.

WSPA reports that Bolivia and Nicaragua have announced full governmental support for the development of a Universal Declaration on Animal Welfare. There are now 37 countries that support the declaration, including the entire European Union.
Once endorsed at the United Nations, a Declaration will constitute the biggest single step forward for animal protection worldwide.
