Reclaiming Animal Rights History – Together

The newly-formed Animal Rights Hub, a project of The Ernest Bell Library, is embarking on an extraordinary journey: to revive and reimagine Cindy Stein’s cherished resource: AnimalRightsHistory – which has been dormant for over a decade. While we can’t 100% recover the original, we are building a new version that honors Cindy’s vision and expands it.

Why This Matters

Cindy worked tirelessly to document notable events and activists, who fought against cruelty to animals.

“Animal Rights-Humane History is a work in progress. Many voices who spoke against cruelty and for the rights of animals are not yet part of this website. Please join us in expanding this resource for the world.”

In 2008, we discovered Cindy’s site and became her enthusiastic collaborators. Her passion for sharing historical literature against animal cruelty also deeply inspired us in our own work. In recent years, in addition to steadily building the Ernest Bell Library, we have been adding content to Wikipedia. Our team members have created over 300 articles – introducing both historical and contemporary individuals, and groups working for animal rights, proto-veganism, vegetarianism, etc. We have also uploaded over 6,000 photographs to Wikipedia for use by others freely.

We were devastated when Cindy passed away in May 2015, leaving her extraordinary project in limbo. We are honoring her legacy and ensuring that her work continues to inspire future generations.

Carrying Cindy’s Vision Forward

Wikipedia is for brief introductory content. Animal Rights Hub is for detailed content. We invite you to join us in celebrating this selfless spirit by helping us build the next chapters.

Like Henry S. Salt, Ernest Bell, Jessey Wade, Cathie & Dugald Semple, Fay K. Henderson, Kathleen Jannaway, and others, Cindy never reserved copyright, ensuring her work could reach the widest possible audience. They all believed in the freedom to share knowledge. We love and share this thinking!
